Citizenship

There are two ways for a person to become a U.S. citizen. One is by operation of law, generally requiring no affirmative action by the individual entitled to citizenship such as in the case of birth in the United States or birth abroad to U.S. citizens. The other way is by naturalization which requires an affirmative application and satisfaction of statutory eligibility requirements. The law provides special derivative benefits for certain children whose parent or parents naturalize, in which situations citizenship is automatically conferred as a matter of law.
